Phil Collier

I’m Phil Collier and I’d like to get to know you. Here is a little about me.

After leaving the security of my position as Fleet Personnel Director of James Fisher and Sons PLC, I set out to do something I’ve always wanted to do…

… start my own business, Turnstone HR, which I sold in 2014. The company provided effective pain relief for HR headaches and quickly built a great reputation with a solid portfolio of clients and an amazing team of 11 staff and consultants. This was an incredible journey and I enjoyed the challenges and successes, rounding out my perspective to include entrepreneurial thinking.

I have a confession to make. I am a serial networker. I love meeting new and familiar faces, finding out what is happening in their world and seeing ways or people I know who can help.

It was in this capacity of ‘helpful’ that I was invited to take on the Chair of the Furness Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses. Since 2011 I have been active and vocal in raising the organisation’s profile, improve its membership and representing local business concerns at the highest levels.

I am also Chair of the Barrow Business Improvement District Steering Group, aiming to provide a much more vibrant town centre, to the benefit of local people and local businesses alike.

In my spare(!) time I am passionate about creativity and performance. I write, sing and play music, one of my life long interests. I ensure I bring this creative flair to my business and professional activities often finding that it is my creativity that gives me both a competitive and collaborative advantage. In January 2015 I became Director of Sonic Zoo Industries, a community interest company that was created with one goal. To create a diverse music economy beneficial to all.

I believe that it is people, when they group together, who make the greatest difference. To business and to the community.
